How many visits does a root canal take?
Usually one or two for the treatment itself, then a separate visit for the crown that protects the tooth afterwards. Straightforward front teeth are often quicker than molars, which have more canals to clean and seal.
Do I really need a crown afterwards?
For back teeth, almost always. A treated tooth has had its inside hollowed out and is more brittle than a healthy one, so the crown is what stops it splitting under chewing load. Skipping it is the most common reason a successful root canal still ends in losing the tooth.
What happens if I put it off?
The infection does not resolve on its own. It spreads into the bone around the root, and what could have been a root canal becomes an extraction. Pain that stops is not a good sign either — it often means the nerve has died, not that the problem has gone.
Is the tooth dead after a root canal?
The nerve is removed, so the tooth no longer feels hot and cold. Everything else about it stays — it is still your own tooth, still held by its own ligament, and still does its job when you bite.
Root Canal Retreatment
A root canal that was done years ago can fail — most often because a canal was narrow, curved or simply not found the first time, leaving bacteria behind. Retreatment is a different job from a first treatment: the existing crown or filling comes off, the old sealing material is cleared out, and only then can the canals be cleaned again. Longer appointment, lower success rate than a first attempt, and we will say plainly if extraction is the better plan.
