Why does a root-canalled tooth need a crown?
A root canal hollows out the inside of the tooth, and what is left is more brittle than a healthy tooth — it can split under normal chewing load. A crown wraps the whole tooth and holds it together, which a filling sitting inside it cannot do. Skipping the crown is the most common reason a technically successful root canal still ends in losing the tooth.
How many visits does a crown take?
Usually two. At the first the tooth is shaped and an impression or scan is taken, and you leave with a temporary crown. The permanent one is fitted at the second visit once it has been made. The temporary is genuinely temporary — if it comes off, that is worth a call rather than a wait, because the prepared tooth underneath is exposed.
What are crowns made of?
Mostly ceramic or zirconia now, which match tooth colour and are strong enough for back teeth. Metal-backed crowns are still used where the bite forces are highest. Which one suits your tooth depends on where it sits and how hard you grind — it is worth asking what is being used and why before the work starts.
How long do crowns last?
Many last a decade or considerably more. What tends to end them is not the crown failing but decay starting at the margin where it meets the tooth, or the tooth beneath fracturing.
