How long does recovery take?
The socket closes over within a couple of weeks, though the bone underneath keeps filling in for months. Most people are comfortable within two to three days and back to normal eating within a week.
Can I drive myself home?
After a simple extraction under local anaesthetic, yes — most people do. If we have agreed on sedation in advance, you will need someone to take you home.
What is dry socket, and how do I avoid it?
A blood clot has to form in the socket and stay there. Dry socket is what happens when it is dislodged, and it hurts considerably more than the extraction did. For the first day: no hard rinsing, no straws, no smoking, no strenuous exercise. Pain that increases around day three is worth a call.
Do I need to replace the tooth?
It depends where it is. A back molar can sometimes be left, but a gap lets neighbouring teeth drift and the opposing tooth over-erupt. It is much easier to plan an implant or bridge before the gap has been there a year, so it is worth discussing at the extraction appointment rather than later.
Post-Extraction Care & Follow-Up
The extraction is the short part; the first day is where it goes right or wrong. A clot has to form in the socket and stay there, which rules out hard rinsing, straws, smoking and strenuous exercise for the first twenty-four hours.
Pain that is easing by day three is healing. Pain that is climbing by day three is usually a dry socket — the clot lost — and it is worth a call rather than waiting it out, because it is treatable in minutes and miserable if left. Being a few minutes away is the point of following up here rather than somewhere you have to plan a trip to.
Extractions, and the day after
The extraction itself is usually the short part. What people underestimate is the first twenty-four hours: a clot has to form and stay put, which rules out rinsing hard, smoking, drinking through a straw and strenuous exercise. Get that wrong and you risk a dry socket, which hurts considerably more than the extraction did.
Being treated in Beit Shemesh helps here in an unglamorous way — if something feels wrong on day two, you can be looked at the same day instead of deciding whether the problem justifies a drive. We would rather see you for five minutes and tell you it is healing normally.
