Is a dental abscess an emergency?
Yes — it is the one dental problem that should not wait. It is a pocket of infection, and the danger is spread rather than pain. Facial swelling, fever, or swelling moving toward the eye or under the jaw all mean today, not tomorrow.
When should I go to hospital instead of a dentist?
Difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling closing an eye, or swelling under the tongue and floor of the mouth. Those need an emergency room, and driving to a dental clinic first costs time you do not have.
Will antibiotics clear it up?
They are a holding measure, not a cure. Antibiotics can quiet the infection, but the source inside the tooth still has to be drained and treated — which is why an abscess that 'went away' on a course of antibiotics so reliably comes back.
The swelling went down on its own. Am I fine?
Not necessarily. An abscess that bursts releases the pressure, so the pain drops sharply and it feels resolved. The infection is still there, now with a drainage path. It still needs treating.
