How do I know if I have gum disease?
Bleeding when you brush is the earliest and most-ignored sign — healthy gums do not bleed. Persistent bad breath, gums that look red and puffy rather than firm and pink, receding gums, or a tooth that has started to feel loose all point the same way. It is usually painless until it is advanced, which is exactly why it gets missed.
Is it reversible?
The early stage, gingivitis, is genuinely reversible — the inflammation settles once the plaque and tartar driving it are removed. Once it progresses to periodontitis and bone around the tooth has been lost, that bone does not grow back. Treatment then stops further loss rather than undoing it. The distinction is the whole reason not to wait.
What does treatment actually involve?
Cleaning below the gumline, where a toothbrush cannot reach — the roots are scaled and smoothed so the gum can reattach to a clean surface. It is done under local anaesthetic where needed and usually across one or two visits depending on how much of the mouth is affected. Afterwards it becomes about maintenance intervals rather than a one-off fix.
What happens if I leave it?
Gum disease is the most common reason adults lose teeth — more than decay. The bone supporting the tooth recedes until the tooth loosens, and by that point the option is often extraction rather than treatment. An implant later costs considerably more than treating the gums now, and needs enough bone to anchor into, which is the thing being lost.
Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning
Once gum disease has been treated, it becomes a maintenance problem rather than a one-off fix. The pockets that were cleaned out will refill with plaque on the same schedule as everyone else's, and the difference is that yours have already cost you bone.
That is why the interval after periodontal treatment is usually shorter than the standard six months — often three or four. It is not upselling; it is that the tissue you are protecting has less margin left than it did.
