Does a wisdom tooth always need removing?
No. A wisdom tooth that has come through straight, bites properly and can be cleaned is left alone. Removal is for the ones causing trouble — repeatedly infected gum over a partly erupted tooth, decay you cannot reach, pressure damaging the tooth in front, or one lying sideways in the bone that will never come through.
What does impacted mean, and does it change the surgery?
Impacted means the tooth is stuck — held under gum or bone, often angled. It does change things: the gum has to be opened and the tooth is usually sectioned and removed in pieces rather than lifted out whole. Longer appointment, more swelling afterwards, and it is why this is oral surgery rather than a routine extraction.
How bad is the recovery, honestly?
Swelling peaks on day two or three rather than day one, which catches people out — feeling worse on the third day is normal, not a sign something has gone wrong. Most people take it easy for 48 hours and are back to normal within a week. Lower impacted teeth are harder going than upper ones.
How do I avoid a dry socket?
A clot has to form in the socket and stay put. For the first day: no hard rinsing, no straws, no smoking, no strenuous exercise. Dry socket is the clot being lost, and it hurts considerably more than the extraction did. Pain climbing rather than easing around day three is the classic sign — call rather than wait it out.
