What makes something oral surgery rather than a normal extraction?
A simple extraction lifts out a tooth that is intact and fully through the gum. It becomes surgical when the tooth has broken at the gumline, is still buried in bone, or has roots curved around something — then the gum has to be opened and the tooth usually sectioned and removed in pieces. Impacted wisdom teeth are the common example.
Will I be put to sleep?
Most oral surgery here is done under local anaesthetic, fully awake — the area is numb, you feel pressure rather than pain. Sedation is arranged in advance where it is genuinely warranted, and if it is, you will need someone to drive you home. General anaesthetic means a hospital, and we will say so plainly if that is what your case needs.

No — that is the point of this page.
