How do I know if I grind my teeth?
Most people who grind do it in their sleep and have no idea. The tells are waking with a sore jaw or a headache at the temples, teeth that are flattening or chipping at the edges, increasing sensitivity, or a partner who has heard it. We also see it on the teeth themselves — the wear pattern is distinctive.
Will a guard stop me grinding?
No, and anyone promising that is overselling. Grinding is driven by sleep and stress, not by your teeth. What a guard does is give the force somewhere harmless to land — the guard wears down instead of your enamel, and the jaw muscles usually settle too. It is protection, not a cure.
Can I just buy one from the pharmacy?
You can, and for some people a boil-and-bite guard is better than nothing. The problems are fit and bulk: one that does not seat properly gets chewed through, falls out, or shifts the bite in a way that makes jaw pain worse. A made-to-measure guard is thinner, stays put, and is built to your own bite.
