My tooth was just knocked out — what do I do right now?
Pick it up by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline — do not scrub it, and do not use soap or tap water at length. If you can, put it straight back in the socket and bite gently on a cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk, or in the person's own saliva. Then come immediately.
How long do I have?
Minutes, not hours. The cells on the root surface start dying once the tooth is out and dry, and the chance of it reattaching falls steeply with time — the first half hour matters most. This is one of the very few dental situations where getting there fast genuinely changes the outcome.
Should I do the same for a child's baby tooth?
No — and this is important. A knocked-out baby tooth should **not** be put back in, because reimplanting it can damage the permanent tooth developing above it. Keep the child calm, control the bleeding with gentle pressure, and call us. Bring the tooth so we can confirm it came out whole.
Will the tooth survive?
Sometimes, and it depends almost entirely on how it was stored and how quickly it got back in. A tooth that was replanted within the first half hour has a genuinely good chance; one that was dry for an hour usually does not. Even when it does reattach it will need a root canal later, and it can still be lost years on — we will be straight with you about which situation you are in.
The one where the drive actually matters
Almost nothing in dentistry is measured in minutes. This is. Once a permanent tooth is out of its socket the cells on the root surface begin to die, and the chance of it reattaching falls steeply over the first half hour — which is short enough that where you are driving to is a real factor, not a marketing line.
