Will the filling match my tooth?
Composite fillings are tooth-coloured and shaded to the tooth they go in, so on front teeth they are generally not noticeable. They bond to the tooth structure rather than being wedged in, which means less healthy tooth has to be removed to hold them in place than with older silver fillings.
Does it hurt?
The tooth is numbed first, so the drilling itself is felt as pressure and vibration rather than pain. Sensitivity to cold for a few days afterwards is common and settles. Sensitivity that is getting worse after a week, or pain on biting that was not there before, is worth a call — it usually means the filling needs adjusting.
I have an old filling that is worn or leaking. Does it need replacing?
Not automatically. An old filling that is intact and sealed can stay for years. It needs replacing when the margin has broken down and decay is getting underneath it, when it has cracked, or when the tooth around it has fractured. We would rather leave a sound old filling alone than replace it because it is old.
Filling or crown?
It depends how much sound tooth is left. A filling sits inside the tooth and relies on the walls around it; once too much of the tooth is gone, or it is cracked, those walls cannot take chewing load and a crown that wraps the tooth is the honest answer. A large filling in a weak tooth is a repair that fails twice.
Cavity Treatment
A cavity and a filling are the same appointment described from two ends — the problem and the repair. Decay is removed, the tooth is cleaned out, and the space is rebuilt with a bonded composite that matches the tooth. Caught at this stage it is one visit and the tooth keeps its nerve.
What changes the answer is how deep it has gone. Decay that has reached the nerve needs a root canal before anything is filled, and decay that has undermined the walls of the tooth needs a crown rather than a filling. Both are on this site because both are what a postponed cavity becomes.
Old Filling Replacement
Old fillings do not need replacing because they are old. An intact, well-sealed filling can stay for decades, and swapping sound work for new work is how a tooth gets progressively larger holes over a lifetime.
They do need replacing when the margin has broken down and decay is tracking underneath, when the filling itself has cracked, or when the tooth around it has fractured. That is a judgement made by looking, not by counting years — and if yours is fine, we will say so.
