Why Does My Jawline Hurt? Causes, Home Care and When to Act

What You Are Actually Feeling
"Jawline" covers a long stretch, from the chin back to the angle under the ear. The lower teeth and their roots sit right above it, so a problem in one of them is easily felt as an ache along the bone. Pain also travels. A single molar can make the whole side of the jaw feel sore.
Where exactly it sits is the best clue:
- Near the chin or the middle of the lower jaw: often a front or lower premolar tooth.
- Along the back corner, under the ear: a lower molar, a wisdom tooth, or the chewing muscle (masseter).
- Just in front of the ear: usually the jaw joint. See why the jaw pops without pain.
- Soft, under the bone, tender to press: sometimes a swollen lymph node or salivary gland rather than a tooth.
When the Cause Is a Tooth
A lower tooth with an infected nerve or an abscess (a pocket of pus at the root) often shows up as a deep jawline ache before the tooth itself feels bad. Gum infection around a partly erupted wisdom tooth does the same, and can make it hard to open fully.
Suspect a tooth if:
- One tooth hurts to cold, heat or biting, and the jawline pain is on the same side.
- There is a pimple-like bump on the gum, or a bad taste that keeps coming back.
- The cheek or jaw is swollen on one side.
Our posts on jaw pain that is really a tooth and wisdom tooth pain cover each in more detail.
When It Is the Muscle or the Joint
People who clench or grind, often without knowing, tend to get a tired, tight ache along the angle of the jaw. It is usually on both sides, worse in the morning or after a long day at a screen, and sometimes comes with a headache at the temples.
If that sounds familiar, read why the jaw hurts on waking and teeth grinding and tooth pain. Most cases settle with a few days of soft food and a warm compress, and the lasting fix is a night guard if clenching is the cause.
What to Do Until You Are Seen
- Warm compress on the sore muscle for 10-15 minutes, a few times a day. If you suspect a tooth abscess, skip the heat and use a cool compress instead.
- Soft food, and chew on the other side for a few days.
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen at the label dose, if you can normally take them.
- Do not press on a lump or try to drain it.
Most people with a jaw that has hurt for a day or two want to wait and see. That is reasonable if there is no swelling and no sore tooth. If it is still there after a week, book an exam. The ADA MouthHealthy page on jaw joint problems backs the same conservative start.
Jawline Pain in Beit Shemesh: When It Cannot Wait for Sunday
We are open Sunday to Thursday, 08:00-20:00, and Friday 09:00-17:00. Shabbat is for genuine emergencies only. A dull, two-sided ache with no swelling and no sore tooth can wait for Sunday with the home care above. A one-sided ache with a throbbing tooth, swelling or fever should not, and a Friday morning start is better than a Friday evening one. We can usually see you the same day on a weekday.
You can describe it to Dr. Joel in English or Hebrew, which helps, because "my jaw hurts" can mean stiff, burning, clicking or a tooth pain that has spread. If the cause is a lower wisdom tooth, see wisdom tooth removal in Beit Shemesh.
Signs That Are Not for a Dentist
- Chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating or pain spreading to the left arm. Call Magen David Adom on 101. Jaw pain can be a heart symptom, and a dental appointment is the wrong place to start.
- Swelling under the chin or tongue, trouble swallowing or breathing, or swelling spreading towards the eye. Go to the nearest emergency room.
- A hard, painless lump that does not go away in two to three weeks, or a sore in the mouth that will not heal. Have it checked by a doctor or dentist promptly.
- Pain after a blow to the face, or a jaw that will not close properly.
For fever with a swollen face or a tooth that throbs, see tooth abscess treatment in Beit Shemesh. The ADA guide to abscesses lists the same warning signs.
If one tooth is sore, or the jaw is swollen, book it in. If both sides ache and it is worst on waking, start with soft food and a warm compress. Not sure which you have? Message Urgent Dental Care, Harav Kook 28/1, Beit Shemesh, on WhatsApp and describe where it hurts. For a painful tooth, see our emergency dentist in Beit Shemesh page.
