Why Does My Jaw Hurt When I Wake Up? Causes and Fixes

A jaw that hurts when you wake up is most often the result of clenching or grinding your teeth overnight. The chewing muscles work for hours while you sleep, so they are sore before the day starts and loosen up by mid-morning. Less commonly the cause is a tooth or gum problem that only shows itself when you lie still. If you are in Beit Shemesh and the ache comes with swelling or a tooth that hurts on its own, skip ahead to the signs that should not wait.

Why It Hurts in the Morning and Not at Noon

Most people do not know they clench. There is no sound, no pain in the moment, and no one to tell you. The first evidence is a stiff, dull ache in front of the ear or along the cheek when you open your mouth to yawn.

The usual reasons, in rough order of how often we see them:

  • Clenching or grinding in sleep (bruxism). Often linked to stress, poor sleep or a full day at a screen.
  • A bite that has shifted. A new crown or filling that sits slightly high, or a tooth that has moved, makes the jaw work harder overnight.
  • The joint itself. The temporomandibular joint (the hinge in front of each ear) can be irritated by clenching, and often clicks as well. See why the jaw pops without pain.
  • A tooth or gum problem. Pain can spread from a single tooth to the whole side of the jaw.

Most of the time the answer is the first one. It is not glamorous, but it is treatable.

Signs That Point to Night Clenching

  • The ache is on both sides, or moves from one side to the other.
  • It is worst on waking and eases through the morning.
  • Your partner hears grinding, or you wake with a headache at the temples.
  • Teeth look flat or worn at the edges, or you have small notches near the gum.
  • Cold or chewing makes several teeth feel sensitive rather than one.

If that sounds like you, read teeth grinding and tooth pain. It explains how grinding can crack a tooth without any warning.

When It Is Actually a Tooth

Lying flat sends more blood to the head, which is why an inflamed tooth often feels worse at night and is noticed first thing. Suspect a tooth if:

  • One tooth hurts to cold, heat or biting, and the jaw ache is on the same side.
  • There is a bump on the gum, a bad taste, or a tooth that feels taller than its neighbours.
  • The face is swollen on one side, or you cannot open as wide as usual.

That pattern is covered in when jaw pain is really a tooth. A sinus infection can also mimic an upper-back-tooth ache, and it usually comes with a blocked nose and pain that shifts when you bend forward.

What to Do This Week

  • Warm compress on the sore muscle for 10-15 minutes, a few times a day.
  • Soft food for a few days. Skip chewy bread, steak, raw carrots and gum.
  • Keep teeth apart through the day. Lips together, teeth apart, tongue resting on the roof of the mouth.
  • Cut caffeine and screens late at night if you can. Both make clenching more likely.
  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen at the label dose, if you can normally take them.

Muscle soreness usually eases within a week. If it keeps returning, the fix is not painkillers. It is a look at your bite and, often, a night guard. We explain what is involved on our night guard page. The ADA guidance on jaw joint problems also recommends starting with conservative care like this.

Morning Jaw Pain in Beit Shemesh: When Does It Wait?

The day you wake up sore decides how urgent it is. We are open Sunday to Thursday, 08:00-20:00, and Friday 09:00-17:00. Shabbat is for genuine emergencies only. A dull, two-sided morning ache with no swelling can wait for Sunday with the home care above. A one-sided ache with a hot, throbbing tooth or swelling should not wait, and we can usually see you the same day on a weekday.

You can also describe it to Dr. Joel in English or Hebrew. That matters here, because "my jaw hurts" can mean stiff, clicking, burning or a tooth pain that has spread, and the exact words change the diagnosis.

Signs That Should Not Wait

  • Chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, or pain spreading to the left arm. Call Magen David Adom on 101. Jaw pain can be a heart symptom, and a dentist is the wrong address.
  • Swelling spreading under the chin or towards the eye, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. Go to the nearest emergency room.
  • Fever with a swollen face or a tooth that throbs. Book same-day care. Our page on tooth abscess treatment in Beit Shemesh explains what happens. The ADA MouthHealthy guide to abscesses lists the same warning signs.
  • The jaw locks open or shut, or the pain followed a blow to the face.

For a more general ache that is not tied to waking, see why the jaw feels tight.

If the ache is two-sided, worst in the morning and better by lunch, it is very likely a clenching habit and not something dangerous. If you are not sure which group you fall into, message us on WhatsApp and describe it. Urgent Dental Care, Harav Kook 28/1, Beit Shemesh, will tell you whether it needs a visit or a few soft meals. For a tooth that hurts on its own, see our emergency dentist in Beit Shemesh page.

Common questions

Why does my jaw hurt every morning?
The usual cause is clenching or grinding your teeth during sleep. The muscles are tired when you wake and ease through the morning. If it happens most days for more than a week or two, ask for a bite check and a night guard.
Can stress make my jaw hurt when I wake up?
Yes. Stress makes many people clench without noticing, especially at night. Weeks of poor sleep or a heavy workload are enough to leave the muscles sore by morning.
Can a tooth infection cause jaw pain in the morning?
Yes. An infected tooth can spread pain into the jaw, and lying flat often makes it worse. If the ache comes with swelling, fever, a bad taste or a tooth that hurts to touch, have it examined the same day.
Will a night guard stop the jaw pain?
It does not stop the clenching, but it protects the teeth and lets the muscles work against something softer. Many people find the morning ache settles within a few weeks. It works best when the guard fits your bite, so a made-to-fit one is better than a shop-bought version.
Can I be seen in Beit Shemesh the same day for jaw pain?
Usually yes on a weekday, especially if there is swelling, fever or a painful tooth. Message the clinic on WhatsApp first and describe what you feel so we can prioritise correctly.
Could morning jaw pain be a heart problem?
Occasionally. Jaw pain together with chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating or pain in the left arm needs an ambulance (101 in Israel), not a dental appointment.
