What to Do If Your Tooth Chips: First Steps and Repair

If your tooth chips, rinse your mouth with warm water, keep any piece you can find, and cover a sharp edge so it does not cut your tongue. A small chip with no pain can be repaired in a single visit. If you are in Beit Shemesh and the tooth hurts, bleeds or has lost a large piece, call the same day.

What to Do in the First Hour

  • Rinse gently with warm water. Check your mouth for the missing piece.
  • Keep the fragment if you find it. Put it in milk or a clean container, not a tissue you will throw away. Sometimes a large piece can be bonded back. See chipped front tooth: how urgent is it.
  • Cover a sharp edge. A small piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax over the rough spot protects your tongue and cheek.
  • Press a clean gauze on the area if the lip or gum is bleeding.
  • Take a painkiller you tolerate if it hurts, and chew on the other side.

The broader checklist is in the first 10 minutes of a dental emergency.

How to Tell a Minor Chip from a Serious One

Size matters less than depth. A chip that only takes a corner off the enamel (the hard outer layer) often feels like a rough edge and nothing more. A chip that reaches the softer layer underneath, or the nerve, announces itself.

  • Can wait a few days: a small chip, no pain, no bleeding, nothing sensitive to hot or cold.
  • Come the same day: pain on biting, sharp sensitivity to air or cold, a pink spot in the middle of the break, or a piece large enough that you can see the damage in the mirror.
  • Come urgently: the tooth is loose, the gum is swelling, or the chip came from a hard blow to the face.

A chip that looks cosmetic is sometimes the visible part of a crack running down the tooth. Cracked tooth: symptoms and treatment explains how to tell.

Do not come to us for a blow to the head with dizziness, vomiting, confusion or a loss of consciousness. That needs a hospital emergency room first, and the tooth can wait.

How a Chipped Tooth Is Repaired

It depends on what is missing:

  • A small enamel chip: smoothed and polished, sometimes with nothing added.
  • A moderate chip: rebuilt with tooth-coloured bonding in one visit. See dental fillings in Beit Shemesh.
  • A large break: a crown to hold what is left. Broken tooth repair compares the options.
  • A chip that exposed the nerve: the nerve may need treatment before the tooth is rebuilt.

Most people with a chipped tooth spend a few days running their tongue along the edge. It is a very natural thing to do, and it does not help. The edge is the same as it was an hour ago.

Chipped Over Shabbat or Before Yom Tov

Teeth chip on a hard roll at the Shabbat table or on a bone at a simcha, and the dentist's office is not open when it happens. The clinic at Harav Kook 28/1 is open Sunday to Thursday 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shabbat is reserved for genuine emergencies only. A chip with no pain can usually wait until Sunday. A chip with pain, bleeding or swelling should not.

Dr. Joel is US-trained and treats in English and Hebrew, so you can say exactly what you bit into and what it feels like. Same-day appointments are possible, and our emergency dentist in Beit Shemesh page explains what happens on the day. For a break that goes deeper, see cracked tooth repair in Beit Shemesh.

What Not to Do

  • Do not bite hard foods on that tooth. A chipped tooth is weaker than it looks.
  • Do not file the edge yourself or use superglue. Both make a proper repair harder.
  • Do not assume that no pain means no problem. A tooth that chipped and is quiet can still have a crack under the surface, so book the check even if it can wait a few days.

A chip at night is covered in broken tooth at night, and the cost conversation is in what an emergency dental visit costs.

If your tooth has chipped and you are not sure how soon to be seen, call or WhatsApp Urgent Dental Care in Beit Shemesh on 055-985-8845. Tell us what is missing and how it feels, and we will tell you whether it can wait.

For independent guidance, the ADA's MouthHealthy has a page on dental emergencies, and the American Association of Endodontists explains cracked and damaged teeth.

Common questions

Can a chipped tooth heal on its own?
No. Enamel does not grow back. A tiny chip may cause no trouble for years, but the tooth stays chipped. It is worth having it smoothed or repaired so the edge does not wear or catch.
Is a chipped tooth an emergency?
Not always. A small chip with no pain can wait a few days. Pain, bleeding, a loose tooth, swelling or a large missing piece should be seen the same day.
Can the chipped piece be glued back on?
Sometimes, if it is large and you kept it. Bring it in milk or a clean container. Whether it can be bonded back depends on its size and how clean the break was.
What can I do about a sharp edge until my appointment?
Cover it with dental wax or a piece of sugar-free gum so it stops cutting your tongue. Chew on the other side and avoid hard foods.
Is there a same-day dentist in Beit Shemesh for a chipped tooth?
Yes. Urgent Dental Care at Harav Kook 28/1 offers same-day appointments. Call or WhatsApp 055-985-8845 and describe the chip, and we will tell you how soon to come.
Will a chipped tooth need a root canal?
Only if the chip reached the nerve or cracked deep enough to inflame it. Most chips are repaired with smoothing or bonding and need no nerve treatment.
