What to Do If Your Tooth Is Cracked: First Steps Tonight

If your tooth is cracked, rinse with warm water, stop chewing on that side, and book a dentist within a day or two. A crack does not heal on its own, and it usually travels deeper the longer the tooth keeps being used. If you are in Beit Shemesh and the tooth hurts or a piece has come off, call us today.

What to Do Right Now

  • Rinse with warm water, gently, to clear out any fragments.
  • Stop chewing on that side. Every bite flexes the crack. Soft food on the other side until you are seen.
  • Keep any piece that came off. Put it in a clean container or a little milk. It cannot always be reattached, but it helps us see what is missing.
  • Avoid very hot, cold and sweet things. They set off the nerve if the crack has reached it.
  • If it hurts, take the painkiller you normally tolerate at the dose on the packet. Painkillers for a toothache compares the options.
  • If the edge is sharp, a small piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax over it protects your tongue and cheek.

Not Every Crack Is the Same

The word covers a wide range, and the treatment follows the depth, not the word:

  • A craze line. A hairline in the enamel, common in adult teeth and usually harmless. It needs watching, not drilling.
  • A chipped cusp. A corner of the tooth has broken off. It usually hurts less than people expect and is fixed with a filling or crown.
  • A crack into the nerve. Pain on biting, sharp pain when you let go, or lingering cold sensitivity. This is the one that needs attention soon.
  • A split tooth or a crack below the gum. The tooth may not be savable. That is less common than the internet suggests, but it exists.

You cannot tell these apart by looking. Cracks are often invisible on an x-ray, so we find them by symptoms, a bite test and a close examination. For the full picture, read our guide on the cracked tooth.

How Long It Can Wait

Tonight, you do not need to rush anywhere unless there is swelling or severe pain. Within a day or two, yes. A crack that flexes with every meal tends to reach the nerve, and a tooth that could have been covered with a crown can end up needing a root canal. How long you can wait with a cracked tooth goes through the timeline, and whether a cracked tooth can heal answers the other question people ask us.

Getting It Seen in Beit Shemesh

The clinic is at Harav Kook 28/1, open Sunday to Thursday 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shabbat is reserved for genuine emergencies only. A tooth that cracks on a Friday afternoon is a different problem from one that cracks on a Sunday morning, because the first has to hold through Shabbat. If it hurts, do not try to wait it out until the week starts. Call or message first, and we will tell you honestly whether it needs to be seen tonight.

Same-day appointments are possible. Dr. Joel is US-trained and treats in English and Hebrew, so you can say exactly when it hurts: on biting, on release, or on cold. Our cracked tooth repair in Beit Shemesh page explains how a visit works, and cracked tooth repair in Ramat Beit Shemesh is about 2 km from the chair.

What the Dentist Does

We examine the tooth, test it for cold and bite pain, take an x-ray, and look for the line itself. Depending on the depth, the treatment is one of these:

  • Monitoring for a craze line with no symptoms.
  • Bonding or a filling for a small chip.
  • A crown to hold a cracked tooth together so it stops flexing.
  • Root canal treatment when the crack has reached the nerve, followed by a crown.
  • Extraction only when the crack runs below the bone. Our guide on when a tooth needs to come out explains where that line sits.

When Not to Come to Us First

Go to a hospital emergency room if you have a cracked tooth after a heavy blow to the face or a fall, with a possible jaw fracture, or if there is swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, trouble swallowing or breathing, or a high fever. That is no longer a tooth problem. Dental infection and the emergency room sets out the signs.

And some cracks can wait. A fine line in the enamel with no pain, no sensitivity and no catching on your tongue can be checked at your next routine visit. Most people who come to us with a cracked tooth have already spent a week chewing on the other side and hoping, which is a reasonable plan for a week.

If a tooth is cracked and you are not sure how bad it is, call or WhatsApp 055-985-8845. Urgent Dental Care is at Harav Kook 28/1 in Beit Shemesh, with emergency treatment outside regular hours. Tell us whether it hurts on biting or on release, and whether a piece came off.

Common questions

Is a cracked tooth an emergency?
It depends on the symptoms. Sharp pain, a piece that broke off, swelling or a sharp edge needs seeing the same day or the next. A hairline crack with no pain can wait for a routine visit. If you have swelling, fever or trouble swallowing, go to a hospital emergency room.
Will a cracked tooth heal on its own?
No. Unlike bone, tooth enamel and dentine do not repair themselves, so a crack stays and tends to deepen. Many cracks cause no trouble for years, but a painful one does not get better without treatment.
What can I take for the pain from a cracked tooth?
The painkiller you normally tolerate, at the dose on the packet. Pain on biting is the sign to avoid chewing on that side. Painkillers hide the pain but do nothing for the crack, so you still need to be seen.
Can I see a dentist in Beit Shemesh the same day for a cracked tooth?
We can offer same-day appointments at Harav Kook 28/1, and Shabbat is for genuine emergencies only. Call or WhatsApp 055-985-8845 first and tell us your symptoms, so we can say how urgent it is.
Can a cracked tooth be saved?
Often, yes. Most cracks are treated with a filling, a crown or a root canal followed by a crown. A tooth is lost only when the crack runs below the bone, and the earlier it is looked at, the less likely that is.
Should I use superglue on a cracked tooth?
No. Household glue is not safe in the mouth and makes a proper repair harder. Dental wax or sugar-free gum over a sharp edge is fine until you are seen.
