Tooth abscess treatment in Tzur Hadassah.
A dental abscess — the throbbing, the swelling, the bad taste — is an infection, and it won't clear on its own. It needs to be drained and the source treated. Dr. Gabriel Joel, DMD does that in-house for Tzur Hadassah patients, whether the tooth is saved with a root canal or taken out, with antibiotics only when they're actually needed. The clinic is a short drive up the road on Harav Kook 28/1 in Beit Shemesh, with same-day appointments so a swelling doesn't have time to spread.

Five-star reviews from our patients on Google
Read all reviews on GoogleI had a broken tooth and was very relieved to find an appointment available so quickly. The entire procedure was smooth, quick, and completely painless. The filling looks amazing and very natural.

I was very afraid of going to the dentist, but from the moment I arrived, I felt safe and comfortable. They made me feel completely at ease and never judged me for my fear.

Dr Joel was so wonderful!!! He was super patient and generous with his time, with my very sensitive 12 year old who needed a root canal. He even suggested we come back when she didn't feel ready for the treatment on the first appointment. He was thorough, explained everything he was doing, and super professional. Thank you so much! I hope we don't need to come back, but if we do, it will certainly be to you!
My son had 2 teeth extracted and asked me to leave 5 stars because the doctor was gentle and gave the shot at the pace he wanted. Highly recommend.

“Hi guys, I hope you both hear this message. I wanted to tell you that I was in awe when I walked out of your clinic. I came home and said to my family: I met the teeth tzaddik in this world, mamash. You guys were so amazing, so caring, so professional. I don't even have words for how we can thank you. I woke up in the morning — he had pain, but he took a painkiller and that helped him too. He took one last night. But thank God, he feels much better. And we're just so happy that we found you guys and that you took care of us. And I've told so many people, even since Friday — listen, we found the real dentist in this world. So, wow. Thank you so, so much. You guys were amazing, I really appreciate it. We'll be in touch after Tisha B'Av and we'll finish the treatment and what needs to be done. Thank you so, so much. Shavua tov.”

Does a root canal hurt?
With modern anesthesia, the tooth being treated is fully numb during the procedure. Most patients feel pressure, not pain — the pain people associate with root canals is usually the infection itself, before treatment.
How do I know if I need a root canal or an extraction?
It depends on how much healthy tooth structure is left and whether the infection has damaged the surrounding bone. We'll always try to save the natural tooth with a root canal first, and only recommend extraction when a tooth genuinely can't be saved.
Can antibiotics replace a root canal?
No. Antibiotics can calm an infection temporarily, but they don't remove the damaged tissue inside the tooth causing it. Without treatment, the infection typically returns.
Why does tooth pain get worse at night?
Lying down increases blood flow to the head, which raises pressure inside an already inflamed tooth. Night pain is a common sign the nerve is affected and worth getting checked rather than waiting out.
What if I can't get an appointment today?
Message us on WhatsApp with your symptoms — we triage every message and will tell you honestly whether it can wait or needs to be seen same-day.

Treating a tooth abscess for Tzur Hadassah — a short drive up the road, seen the same day
What a dental abscess actually is
An abscess is a sealed pocket of pus where a bacterial infection has taken hold — most often at the very tip of a tooth's root, sometimes in the gum beside it. It is the end point of a nerve that has died inside the tooth or a cavity that was left to burrow deep enough to reach it. What it feels like is a deep, steady throb that does not let up, a tooth that is sore to bite on, a foul taste when it starts to weep, and often a swollen cheek or a soft lump on the gum that swells and settles.
The mistake people make is reading a moment of relief as the end of it. When a gumboil bursts and the pressure drops, the ache eases and the whole thing feels over — but the infection at the root has not gone anywhere, and it comes back. This is the honest reason a Tzur Hadassah patient should not sit on an abscess over a weekend: it does not resolve on its own, it only waits.
The tooth is usually saved, not lost
Most people picture an abscess ending in an extraction, and most of the time it does not have to. Where the tooth still has sound structure — which is the majority — the treatment is a root canal: the infected pulp is cleaned out of the canals, the space is disinfected and sealed, and the tooth is built back up and crowned. The pressure comes down, the pain settles over the following day, and you finish with your own tooth still in your jaw rather than a gap to fill.
Where an abscess is pointing to the surface, draining it is part of the same visit, and that is what brings the fastest ease. An extraction is kept for the tooth that is genuinely past saving — split down the root, or too little left to rebuild — and you are told plainly which of the two your tooth is before anything is decided, not partway through.
Why a course of antibiotics is not the cure
Antibiotics earn their place when an infection is spreading through the tissue, when there is a fever, or when a swelling has to be brought down before the tooth can be worked on safely. What a tablet cannot do is clear the tooth itself. The bacteria are dug in inside a dead nerve with no blood supply, so nothing you swallow reaches them; the day the course finishes, the abscess is free to build again.
That is why a prescription on its own — without opening the tooth — is a pause, not a fix. It calms the tissue and buys a few days, but the root canal or, rarely, the extraction is the part that actually ends the infection. Where antibiotics genuinely help you they are prescribed, and where they would only put off the real work, you are told that straight rather than sent away with tablets and a false sense the problem is handled.
The swelling that belongs in a hospital
Nearly every abscess is handled calmly in the chair, but a small number stop being a dental matter. A swelling that climbs toward the eye or spreads down into the floor of the mouth, a fever alongside a puffy face, or any trouble swallowing or breathing is a sign the infection is on the move and needs a hospital straight away. From Tzur Hadassah that means the nearest emergency room, not a wait for a dental slot.
It is a rare category and it is the opposite of a hard sell, but it is the one where an hour counts — so it is worth knowing where the line sits before you are anywhere near it.
Close to home, and what it costs
Tzur Hadassah sits in the Judean hills a short drive up the road from Beit Shemesh, so the clinic on Harav Kook 28/1 in Beit Shemesh is a quick trip down rather than a run into Jerusalem and a hunt for parking. Because Tzur Hadassah is close and familiar ground for the practice, a swelling does not have to wait — we hold same-day slots for exactly this, and evenings can be arranged when it flares after hours. Send a WhatsApp with a short description and a photo of any swelling, and we will judge how urgent it is before you set off.
This is private care, and an abscess is quoted after a look, because saving the tooth with a root canal and crown is a different job from taking it out. You get an exact figure on WhatsApp before anything begins. Dr. Joel is USA-trained and works in both English and Hebrew, which takes a real obstacle out of the way when you are trying to describe how a tooth feels; reach the clinic on 055-985-8845 and you will get an honest answer on how quickly to come in.
