How long does the whole process take?
Commonly several months. The post is placed, then left to integrate with the bone before the crown goes on top. That waiting period is what makes an implant hold; it is not padding in the schedule.
Will I need a bone graft?
Sometimes. Bone shrinks where a tooth has been missing for a while, and an implant needs enough of it to anchor into. Imaging at the assessment shows whether there is enough or whether grafting comes first — another reason not to leave a gap for years.
Implant or bridge?
A bridge is quicker and needs no surgery, but it is supported by cutting down the two teeth either side. An implant stands on its own and leaves the neighbours untouched. If the adjacent teeth are healthy, that argues for the implant; if they already need crowns, a bridge can make more sense.
How long do implants last?
The post itself is designed to be permanent and often is. The crown on top is the part that wears and may need replacing over the years. Both depend heavily on keeping the gum around the implant healthy — implants do not decay, but the gum and bone around them can still be lost.
