She Chipped a Veneer Eight Days Before Her Wedding

Quick answer: A chipped veneer can usually be repaired in composite the same day, without removing it. Full replacement takes one to three weeks and is the wrong choice under time pressure — repair now, replace properly afterwards.

The call

Eight days before the chuppah. Bracha, 23, from RBS Alef, phoned in tears at nine in the morning. She had bitten a hard-boiled sweet at a sheva brachot planning meeting and taken a chip out of the corner of an upper front veneer, placed two years earlier.

We saw her at eleven. The first thing to establish, before touching anything, was the timeline: eight days is enough for a good repair and not enough for a properly made replacement veneer. Attempting the latter would have meant a temporary at the chuppah, which is exactly the outcome she was afraid of.

What we found

A porcelain veneer on the upper left central incisor with a chip roughly 3mm across at the incisal corner. The rest of the veneer was firmly bonded — no lifting at the margins, no darkness under the porcelain, no sensitivity. The underlying tooth was not exposed.

Two things told us why it had chipped. Her lower front teeth were contacting that corner heavily on protrusive movement, so the veneer was taking a load it was never designed for. And she was clenching. She admitted to waking with a sore jaw most mornings, which in the run-up to a wedding is not exactly mysterious.

What we did

A direct composite repair, in one visit, about fifty minutes.

The technical detail matters here, because bonding composite to porcelain is not the same as bonding to tooth. We isolated the tooth, roughened the fractured porcelain, etched it with hydrofluoric acid, applied a silane coupling agent and then bonding resin. Without the silane step, the repair looks fine and falls off in a fortnight.

Then we layered composite to rebuild the corner, matching the veneer's translucency at the edge, and polished it to a high shine — the difference between an invisible repair and one that goes dull in photographs is almost entirely in the polishing.

Finally, we adjusted her bite so that corner was no longer taking the brunt of protrusive contact.

The outcome

She was photographed extensively eight days later and the repair is invisible in all of it. We saw her three months after the wedding to discuss replacing the veneer properly, and in the end she chose to leave the repair, which was still holding well.

She now wears a night guard. That was the real conversation — the veneer chipped because of a bite problem, and a new veneer without a guard would have chipped in its turn.

What to do if this happens to you

1. Keep the fragment, though porcelain chips rarely bond back reliably.
2. Do not use household glue. It contaminates the surface and makes a proper repair harder.
3. Say when your event is on the first phone call. It genuinely changes the plan.
4. Avoid biting anything hard with the front teeth until you are seen.
5. Ask whether repair or replacement is realistic in your timeframe — do not let anyone start a replacement you cannot finish.
6. Ask why it chipped. Veneers do not usually fail without a reason.
